My tx2500 came with the 4 cell and what looks like the 8 cell. Which is nice!
The 8 cell seems to last for ages.

Is there a noticeable weight difference between the 6 and 8 cell battery?

I didnt notice much weight difference, but the size and shape are important issues if you save it in a tight bag or something like that.

Re: Simplified: HP tx series batteries lineup (tx1000/2000/2500)
I have a tx2500. On Boot I was getting Error# 601 which says it's the internal battery..The BIOS battery test is NOT listed on my ESC diagnostic list but after removing the external battery the error went away.
I then tested the External and it says My 8 cell (HP#432663-361) died...
The Battery begun losing it's charge over 8 months ago and found it hard to believe that the 8 cell would begin to lose charge so quickly.
According to my HP Assisstant Battery Check:

Re: Simplified: HP tx series batteries lineup (tx1000/2000/2500)

The HP Pavilion TX1000 Series Tablet PC is a series of notebook computers from Hewlett Packard introduced in February 2007. These notebooks are designed for Windows Vista. The TX series uses the AMD Turion 64 X2 series of processors. This series has a 12.1-inch touch screen and a DVD+RW; it competed well with the top-of-the-line tablets at the time of its release. All models came with an NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 graphics system, which features 128 MB of integrated graphics and an extra shared graphics memory of up to 916 MB. This model has been superseded by the HP Touchsmart tx2 Series, and subsequently by the HP Touchsmart tm2.
