I'm going to buy that laptop soon, can I get the exact drivers you used to get XP working and also? Is the touchscreen working in XP? What about handwriting recognition software too?
ANd finally, how is the battery life, and what processor model did you get, along with which cell count did you choose for your battery 4 or 6?

well I like XP better - on Vista Itunes crack a little and the system itself is slow as hell. Still my wife stayed with Vista. It all depends on what are you going to do

I managed to finally get all the drivers. It works PERFECTLY with WinXP PRO including the Touchscreen. NO NEED for Tablet PC Edition.

I'm uploading it as I type this. It totals to about 215MB. I'll post the link in a bit.


EDIT: I have RAR'd the entire set of Drivers. I know I know... it's a pain in the ass to download the whole thing when you are looking for just one or two drivers. The only reason I did it, is because there are so many new users and owners of the TX's that it would be easier to download the entire working set rather than have to individually keep scouting for them.

If anybody can throw some light on the last and final "Unknown Device" left over in the Device Manager, it would be great. Other than that... everything else is here. Look no further. Just follow the instructions and you will have a Fully Functional & Blazing Fast TX with Windows XP PRO. Just the way it should be.

Installation Notes
-----------------

1)
To install the NVIDIA GeForce Go6150 Graphics Driver, run the executable.
It will extract to a temporary folder and the setup will not continue as it will not recognise the chipset model.
At this point go to the device manager to find the VGA device without a driver.
Click on update driver and in the Hardware Update Wizard, click on "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)".
On the next screen, Click on "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install".
On the next screen, click on "Have Disk" and navigate to the folder where the files from the installer were extracted.
This will install the Go6150 driver and you will have a perfectly working display.

2) The touch screen driver works very well. During installation you will be prompted to activate the driver for a PS/2 interface touchscreen. DO NOT ACTIVATE IT. The touchscreen has a USB interface. Along with the driver the software that comes with it (TouchKIT) is fantastic. You will need to do a 4 step calibration. When you see the X mark on the 4 corners of the screen, you have to press and hold the stylus till the X mark moves to the next corner. This is much much more reactive than the touchscreen in Vista. It works great.

3) I have not included the Synaptics Touchpad driver as WinXP already seems to have support for it.

4) All the buttons including the Remote work after installing the drivers provided in this pack. The only exception is the Mobility Center button that does not function. Even the Play / Pause, Forward, Rewind and Stop buttons behind the screen work.

5) The 5-in-1 Card reader also works. No need for any additional drivers.

6) After installing all the drivers, you will be left with only one "Unknown Device" which has been identified as the HP Quick Launch Buttons. Out of the 4 buttons, 3 of them will work after the installation of QuickPlay and Pivot. The Mobility Center button will not work because XP does not have that feature unlike Vista.

7) HP Quick Launch Buttons Software - All this does is enable the Quick Play and DVD Buttons in Windows. It does not give you the option to reassign any of the buttons. Not necassary in my opinion if you are going to install the next software. (Quick Play for Windows). No point installing a 30 MB software for just 1 button. However, if Pivot (screen rotation software) described below does not respond to the Rotate button next to your screen, then you might have to install this.

8) HP Quick Play for Windows - The standard Quick Play software that accompanies almost all HP Laptops. Good for DVD's. This software will enable ONLY the DVD button from Windows and the Quick Play button works from inside the Quick Play software.

9) Pivot v7.68 - This software gives you the ability to rotate your screen to any orientation but the biggest feature is that it enables the Rotate Button at the bottom of your screen. Also, Please note that the TouchKit input software relies on Pivot to be able to sense the change in orientation and adjust the calibration data accordingly. If you do not install Pivot and rotate the screen using the NVIDIA tray applet, any inputs you make with the stylus will be way off. This is an absolute must-install if you plan on using your touchscreen for inputs across all orientations.

10) Notebook Hardware Control - After installing XP, you will notice that the power profiles are nowhere as customizable as in Vista. The backlight doesn't dim when you are running on Battery and there is no automated way of underclocking the CPU when on battery or increasing when on AC power. NHC will give you all the power associated features that were a part of Vista.

11) RitePen - The most important feature of any Tablet is Handwriting Reconition (HR). Normally this task is associated to the Operating System. Unlike the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, Win XP Pro does not have native support for Handwriting Recognition. That is where RitePen comes in. It enables HR across all applications and in my estimation works better than the HR in Vista. It comes with a dictionary for on the fly error corrections which can be a huge time saver.

12) Tablet Input Panel / Onscreen Keyboard - This is another very important feature of the Touch Screen Input experience. You cannot achieve the true TabletPC experience without an Onscreen Keyboard. This software gives you just that.

13) The Alternate set of drivers posted above are stripped versions. Basically, they have the installers gutted out of them, so that they are lean and mean thus saving tonnes of space. They are fully functional and are only about 44MB for the whole set of drivers. All that is missing from this set is the HP Webcam Driver. Also, please note that unlike the larger pack I have provided above, this simplified pack does not contain any of the softwares that are required to get these various devices to function (Verisoft for Fingerprint ID, Lightscribe Host Software to enable labelling Lightscribe media, HP Wireless Assistant Software and the TouchKit software to be able to use the Touchscreen)

1) The TX works great with XP loaded onto it. Since I missed the Vista Look, I got myself CrystalXP's BricoPack. It makes XP look just like Vista without causing any system slowdown / stability issues.

Hi,

I just got a TX1000 and was able to successfully downgrade from Vista to WinXP. The touchscreen works fine but I'm curious if someone could tell me how I could restore the handwriting recognition functionality of the device. The yellow tabbed widget appears to be integral to the Vista Tablet version and with the XP downgrade, it has disappeared. I've tried installing the Windows XP Tablet Recognizer Pack and the requisite Tablet PC SDK 1.7 from the microsoft website but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW Leepriestenator, after installing the device drivers which I was able to obtain using your megafile, I also noticed the unknown device. In my case, it appeared to refer to the Realtek High Definition Audio which had a yellow exclamation point which I was able to resolve by redirecting it to the audio driver folder. After it updated, the unknown device disappeared.
