My experience with 4 GB & TX1000
I've seen a bunch of people asking what the tx1000 is like with 4 GB of ram, and I've seen a lot of speculative answers, but I must have missed anyone who actually tried installing 4 GB into their tx1000. Well, when I decided to get the TX1000, I went with the 1 GB ram route, then purchashing my own 4 GB to install. (This Ram Here). It was $215 After Rebate a few days ago, so I figured it was a good deal compared to the extra $575 through HP. Though, I did my comparison beween 2 GB to 4 GB. I have come to grips with the fact that since I have Home Premium, the 32-bit OS will not see all 4 GB.
So here is my experience:
-HP Had no compatibility problem with the new ram. Its PC2 667
-Vista picks up 2.87 GB of the 4GB. (1.87 GB of 2 GB before)
-I don't have any performance programs, except for the Windows Experience Index. So for what its worth, RAM score = 5.4 with 2 GB RAM, now its 5.6. Not a big change. Graphics, which uses part of the onboard memory, did not change at all.
-Boot time did not change.
-Time to open Internet explorer, and load my homepage went from 15 seconds to 10 seconds.
All in all, the extra memory did not add much to the system, so maybe it wasn't worth the money. I haven't installed Matlab yet (engineering computation program), but that should be a good measure of whether that extra memory makes a difference or not.

Re: My experience with 4 GB & TX1000
i think boottime is hd related for most parts
can you verify that the unseen mb's because of the 32bit os
cant be given to the video card ?
i believe that getting the mem oneself if it's compatible is often worth it
i have no doubt that higher quality mem can be gotten far cheaper then any
that comes along with brand pc's :P

Re: My experience with 4 GB & TX1000
Looked in the Bios. The maximum video card memory is still capped at a measly 128 MB, so it looks as though that .13 GB that is missing from the 4 GB and 2 GB ram are used for the graphics card. So it does not look like the bios has the ability to use extra memory.

Re: My experience with 4 GB & TX1000
It's good to know that it works, I wonder why HP states the maximum as 2gb.
I think the main benefits for Matlab will be seen when switching across to a 64 bit version of Matlab, as you get both the 64bit benefits and the ability for Matlab to swallow up more RAM. I think in 32bit Matlab can only swallow a free memory block of up to ~1.5 GB.

Re: My experience with 4 GB & TX1000
Interesting.
I know you can't do the anytime upgrade from 32 bit vista to 64 bit vista, but is it possible to do a clean install of 64-bit vista, even though the system was built originally with 32-bit in mind?

Re: My experience with 4 GB & TX1000
if drivers are there then yes
the cpu is perfectly cable of 64bit
and people report having bought
these laptops with 64bit vista from hp
not sure how much Matlab is kept back by pure mem access
and how much it depend on harddisk speed and cpu

Re: My experience with 4 GB & TX1000
From HP's site:
"Supports up to 4GB DDR2 memory (Dual Channel Memory Support; For 4 GB memory configuration, up to 1 GB may not be available with 32-bit operating systems due to system resource requirements)"
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/vn/en...-80653844.html
Keep in mind that the 32 bit version of Vista that your tx shipped with won't see all 4GB. You will have to upgrade to the 64 bit version of Vista Premium for the computer to be able to use all 4GB.
No, upgrading your RAM shouldn't affect your warranty.

Re: My experience with 4 GB & TX1000
I have the tx1000 w/2gb of ram and a 2.2Ghz processor and the computers operation seems to be pretty quick. Whaen would having 4Gb of RAM on this computer be neccesary if there was no intention to upgrade to 64 bit vista? How useful is having that much ram on this computer? Will it aide watching movies, videos, downloads, music, etc.? and would upgrading to 4gb be worth it with a 1.8ghz processor? thanks, sorry if this noob question.
