few questions before i plunge in
Hi,
After browsing around this amazing site for a few week, I've finally decided to buy Fujitsu T2010. I have few questions before I click the order button.
1) Do I have to buy the screen protectors offered on 3rd page? If so, which one? I consider laptop as consumable good, so I don't want to protect it like it's a piece of jewelry or something. But if the screen protectors are absolutely necessary for daily use, I would buy them.
2) Is it worth extending the warranty and purchasing the screen warranty?
3) I'm planning to buy 1gb ram version and buy 2gb stick separately. I'm worried that then I wouldn't be able to use the dual-channel capability. Does this really affect the performance?
4) I notice that the high capacity battery protrudes out. How is that? Is it cumbersome or unattractive?
5) I'm debating on if I should go ahead buy the SSD (i don't need much space really) or just buy the regular HD version then later swap it. My concern is that I heard SATA SSD drains power while in hibernating mode. Is this true?
Thanks a lot guys for reading. I'd really appreciate your help!

Re: few questions before i plunge in
1. I wouldn't, it comes with the fujitsu ones for free, and they suck. The only other ones there are the 3M ones which I bought, and suck. Whatever you get will decrease the vividness of the display. I have the indoor/outdoor with no screen protector. I can tell you that with the abuse I put it through doing a lot of penning all day without cleaning it as often as needed it is covered in scratches. This creates a kind of rainbow line if you look for it, but the truth is, you don't notice when doing stuff. My screen is even covered in oils from the hand always on it, and I don't notice much until I wipe it down. My motto is, use it! Use it so much it becomes like those dirty old ***** that you really should throw out, but are so much more comfy because they've practically molded to your body. Computers are disposable whether you like it or not, so use it and buy a new one in a year or two with no regrets. The added bonus is that the factory coating can come off like a screen protector! So all these scratches will disappear and the screen will look new once you decide to remove it, perhaps before selling it when it's time for a new one.
2) Life is short, play hard.
3) I started out with a 1GB model, but then ended up with the preconfigured 2GB. Yes it's overpriced compared to what one could order later, but Vista is a hog and it spares you having to deal with it. Optimally you really should either have dual 1GB or 2GB matched pairs.
4) At first I bought the standard battery, but after examining it I thought it felt like it was missing something. Yes the extended battery at first glance seems odd, but I realized from a design perspective it is more symmetrical. It might be easier for you to hold, fits the bump case better, and I just think it's cool.
5) Do you really need the SSD? If not, I would wait and swap it. But really, by the time SSD drives are in the spotlight this machine will be outdated. I will probably not swap it, but buy a new tablet when the SSDs drop in price.
If you happen to be buying from the fujitsu store, click my link. It's supposed to give me a tiny % of the sale. Enjoy your t2010, it's a nice machine.

Re: few questions before i plunge in
Rubenhan,
I am at the same stage and have the same questions, particularly about the warranty, memory and battery.
1) Warranty
I think I am going to get the 1 year screen. I think the extended warranty is a little unlikely as anything mechanical/production will generally break in the first year. Since its my first tablet, I figure the screen replacement for one year will give me a chance to learn about how I use/carry it without babying it too much. Then, if necessary, I can replace it later.
The longer replacement warranty is tempting as the only breakage I have dealt with in 8 years is a laptop screen that broke. But the cost is so high, it becomes a significant percentage of the cost of the laptop and the money would better be spent on putting it away for a future model, IMHO.
2) Memory. I was thinking of the model configured with 2 512s, so I would replace one with 2mb. I also don't have any real world sense of the issues. Everyone says dual channel is faster, but I can't imagine 2 gig of dual channel memory is faster than 2.5 gb of non-dual channel, or is it? Just don't know.
3) Battery. I am worried about carrying it around easily as a tablet surface, so will probably go for the lighter battery; but I can imagine what you mean about the weight distribution of the extended. Has anyone on the forum tried both?
4) Processor. I am planning on going for the whimpy 1.02 as it is significantly cheaper and nothing I do is processor intensive. I just can't imagine a 15% processor speed difference at this level will cause an earlier obsolescence.
5) I would be curious to hear about what you think regarding the SSD. I think I will wait and get one in the future as my current computer has 58gigs of music et al. But I am attracted to the idea of it. The literature says the SSD should be laptop friendly, so even if the SSD does draw a higher power consumption at hiberanation, maybe it is still better in the long run.
Anyway, great questions, please post any other conclusions or info.
Best wishes.

Re: few questions before i plunge in
I carry my T4210 with two batteries in one hand all the time, and I'm not a strong guy, so you're probably going to be okay with a T2010 with an extended battery.
SSD would be awesome as it would allow you to set your tablet down more like a book....with a small drop at the end. That little drop is one big step towards making a tablet entirely usable as a mobile writing pad IMO. I intend to get SSD as soon as 100 gb drives drop under $300.Eugene Leafty

Likewise, considering a 128GB SSD once it's affordable, and might upgrade to 3GB for a RAM drive too... after I get a modular bay battery.

Re: few questions before i plunge in
Hey guys,
So I finally decided to purchase T2010. I bought through Fujitsu, and with their 10% discount, i think the price was pretty good. Too bad the ETA is 23 of October. Gotta wait two whole weeks!
I didn't get the SSD drive for now. I don't need much space so 32gb SSD would be sufficient but I decided to hold on to it because I don't believe it's fine tuned to the maximum capability. I would definitely upgrade it in a year or so though.
What's the dead pixel policy for fujitsu? From what I read in the forum, it looks like my tablet will come from Japan. If I find dead pixels, wouldn't it be a problem to return it?
Seriously though, I'm very excited about this!

Loose AC connector plug in body of T2010?
Has anyone had trouble with their AC connector as this user demonstrates in the following clip?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LRZjsC_f_k
He can wiggle the AC adapter plug in the power socket with quite a range of motion.
