Lately, I've been thinking about getting a Mac Mini and putting it in the basement and controlling it from my iPad. I know this is possible (there are a lot of apps for it). Do any of you have experience with it?

I'm basically wondering if the performance is good enough. I already use my iPad for drawing, Pages, and Numbers, so I'm comfortable using the interface to create, not just consume. Can you play games over it? Can you watch videos over it? Can you hear audio? Are there any drawbacks that aren't immediately obvious?

Note: I'm starting a series of short reviews of apps for the iPad. These generally won't be new apps, but they are ones that I think everyone should know about.

Zipping them up may be the most commonly-used way to reduce the size of a group of files. RAR is also very popular. Happily, there's a version of WinZip for your iPad (and iPhone too). So if you get a Zip file as an email attachment or for a RAR file on the Internet you can access the contents of these directly on your tablet.

This is no third-party, kludgy solution -- WinZip was developed by WinZip Computing, the same company that created the Windows version. Not surprisingly, I've found it to be a generally solid app that works well without hassles. And it's free.

In Use

When you tap on a Zip or RAR file, your iPad will pop up a box asking you what you want to use to open it. Once you have WinZip installed, it will appear as one of the options. Tap on it, and the software will go to work extracting the contents of the original file.

It will display these in a column on the left, with the original folder structure preserved. Tap on one of the files, and the contents will be displayed on the right. This is fine if you just want to look at something, but if you want to work with the file, you can use the "Open in..." button to export the file to another app, like a word processor or image-editing software.

Size: 77.4 KB" style="float: CONFIG" />

WinZip can display a wide range of common file types. This includes most image types, Microsoft Office files, and many more. If it can't display the file, the app will still give you the optin to open it in another app.

The only complaint I have with the iOS version of WinZip is that it will occasionally choke on very large Zip files. If I'm trying to open one that's 5GB or larger it will sometimes crash.

Conclusion

If you're like me and your iPad is serious productivity tool, you probably need WinZip. It's completely free and available on the Apple App Store.

I just had to turn my desktop PC on for the first time in two weeks. Since I've been in charge of TabletPCReview I've been trying to do everything on my iPad, and I've had a lot of success. Running my personal life off it hasn't been an issue, but a handful of the things I need for work still have to be done in Windows.

The desktop is warming up now because I need some older files off of it. I'm considering getting a stand-alone wireless network drive so I don't have to mess with a whole computer when all I really need is a file server.

On the other hand, there are still some areas where the iPad is weak. For example, I use Photoshop Touch to edit most of the images on TPCR, but it has some limitations. Specifically, it's terrible at resizing images -- they come out very bitmapped if I have to make a large image into a small one. Sometimes I have to turn to the full version.

But still, I want you to know that I practice what I preach. 95% or so of what I do for this site is done on my tablet.
