Every once in a while when I'm using the stylus there is a staticy creaky popping sort of sound that sounds like a giger counter. It isn't all that loud and I mostly only hear it when I'm drawing at night and the house is silent. I haven't noticed any performace related problems. Has anyone else ever noticed something like this with their tablet pc? Does anyone know what this means and whether I am about to lose an otherwise lovely companion?

I haven't seen Silvermont get a lot of attention yet in these forums, but it looks really exciting to me (way more exciting than Haswell), so I wanted to highlight and focus on it in this thread.

Here are a couple of in-depth articles on Silvermont:
Silvermont, Intel's Low Power Architecture
AnandTech | Intel

Quotes below are taken from the Anandtech article.

What is Silvermont?

Intel's new Atom microarchitecture, the first to come out since 2008. It uses a 22nm die, unlike current Atom architectures, which allows it to take advantage of all the R&D Intel put into its Ivy Bridge processors. Moving to 22nm is where a lot of the dramatic performance gains and power savings come from.

It also represents a new commitment from Intel refresh the architecture every year - look for Airmont next.

What's so great about it?

Compared to current generation Atom architecture (Saltwell):

2-3 times the performance at the same power level

5 times lower power consumption at the same performance level

These numbers are enormous. Incremental improvements are usually in the 5%-15% range, even though they may involve a lot of blood, sweat and tears by the engineers. Unfortunately, users will barely notice gains like that. Here, we're talking hundreds of percent! Users will definitely feel a difference, even if Intel is being way too optimistic.

What does it mean for tablets?

2-3 times performance gain means that Atom may finally present users with a good Windows experience.

Quote:

There’s no doubt in my mind that a Baytrail Android tablet will deliver amazing performance, the real unknown is whether or not a Baytrail Windows 8 detachable/convertible will be fast enough to deliver a good enough legacy Windows experience. I suspect it’ll take Airmont before we really get there by my standards, but it’ll be close this round for sure.

(Baytrail is the tablet implementation of Silvermont, will be quad-core, and will go into Android as well as Windows tablets.)

I have always been hesitant to recommend Atom-based tablet PCs to users in the What Tablet PC Should I Buy forum, because I'm never quite convinced that the performance is really up to their needs. But the price point, battery life, weight and even temperature make Atom-based tablets irresistible, despite the questionable performance.

I'm very hopeful the advent of Silvermont means I no longer need to hesitate.

Baytrail tablets are expected to be out end of this year.

What does it mean for smartphones?

2-3 times performance increase is nothing to sniff at, but 5 times lower power? That's phone-level power consumption. That's like saying you can run Windows 8 ... on your phone ... and get a decent battery life. *expletives*

Quote:

The ability to deliver 2010 11-inch MacBook Air performance in a phone is insane.

Merrifield phones are expected to be out next year.

I'm more excited about Silvermont than I am about Haswell, even though Silvermont has no place in my tablet PC life, because I see differences significant enough to be felt as significant by the user.

I see most of the low cost windows tablets are using Intel Atom CPU & I imagine the CPU in androids are not enough for windows.

But where does the high cost come from? Is it the CPU, other hardware requirements or the Windows OS itself?
Question is how much is a windows tablet without Windows installed!?

Any ideas appreciated

You can setup 3 different devices and change the opacity of each device so you can compare them against each other. You can even toggle between landscape and portrait views. Just might be that deciding factor

Some no name brand trying to best Microsoft and Samsung with an i7 processor and they just embarrassed themselves. Go home kid, Windows tablet is big boys’ playground. Sure it runs faster and keep it somewhat cool based on the review, but KUPA tried to cheat with i7 on X15 instead go toe to toe with the big boys with i5. I think I now know why they went with a removable battery design, because they know their battery life aren’t no good!

The review is here if anyone is interested:

I expect these guys to be gone in 3 months. Maybe by then, they sell x15 50 cents on a dollar and I will sneak one to see what it is all about.

Hi

About a year ago my girlfriend’s trusty old thinkpad gave up. We haven’t bought a new one yet (we are getting by with our Android phones and my desktop PC – and sometimes my work laptop) because I’m too picky for my own good. Originally I was waiting for the extreme low power Haswell variants or Baytrail (I have always resented netbooks and thereby Atom by proxy) as I find the current core based tablets too big and heavy.
However, as we are going on a long trip this summer we really want something small and light to take with us. As we would like to run MS Office and a couple of other legacy windows programs, the choice of a Win8 based tablet is obvious. I quickly realized that I would just have to cope with an atom-based as neither Haswell or Baytrail based tablets would be available. After having read a lot of reviews, I have decided on a HP Envy X2 as it seems to be well-built, has a clam shell style keyboard dock (which a want) and is quite reasonably priced.

However, before I buy the thing, I would like to know if any of you are aware of new convertibleWin8 tablets coming out before the end of July.

Thanks in advance.
