Default ICS now available for x86 devices!

    When avaliable to EP121

Test Build Of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich For x86 Devices Now Available

One of the key new changes in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is that it supports x86 based processors right out of the box. This is quite important for Intel, since its Medfield based SoC for phones, is ultimately an x86 based processor.

There was still some work left on the x86 scenario when Ice Cream Sandwich was announced. Well, now the Android-x86 team has released the first public build of Ice Cream Sandwich for x86 powered This means that developers and advanced users can now run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on their PCs/Tablets or Laptops without the need for an emulator.

Below are the key features of Android 4.0.3 based for x86 devices -:
Kernel 3.0.8 with KMS enabled. Most tablets/netbooks can run Android-x86 in the native resolution.
OpenGL hardware acceleration for AMD Radeon and Intel chipsets. However, if you have trouble with it, you can disable it by adding HWACCEL=0 to the cmdline.
    Support Wifi, multitouch and audio.
    Experimental support of Renderscript.
    Hybrid mode of iso images.
A new text based GUI installer which supports ext3/ext2/ntfs/fat32 filesystems.
External usb drive and sdcard are auto mounted on plugging.
    Compressed filesystem (squashfs)
There are still a few issues with this build, like the camera does not work, no support for Ethernet and the Suspend/Resume feature might not work on some devices.

Readers who are interested in trying out Ice Cream Sandwich on their x86 PCs can download the required ISO file from here. Advanced users and developers can find more info about Ice Cream Sandwich for x86 devices here.

Yes should be. Since previous builds work fine. I was running the Honeycomb build from a Live USB setup.

I used universal USB installer found here (Universal USB Installer – Easy as 1 2 3 | USB Pen Drive Linux)

    - Choose android x86 under distribution
    - Copy the file name (before hand, via Windows explorer) and paste it in the dialog box when it asks for the ISO (by default the program is looking for the older gingerbread 2.3 ISO which has a different name).

Haven't had the time to run ICS yet on my EP121, but will probably do so this weekend. I've created the Live USB though (as outlined above).

@CF77: The files expand to about 200 MB. So any pendrive above that should work. During boot the files are loaded to RAM. Files (apps downloaded and stuff) are not retained.

However, the instructions (under "Save data to USB/hard disk") on Get Source - Android-x86 - Porting Android to x86 will let you retain files.

@kamikaze: The "asus laptop" is the one you would need to download for your EP121:
    http://android-x86.googlecode.com/fi...p-20120101.iso

For anyone who wants to try ICS, here is what works and what does not:

    Works:
    WiFi
    Sound
    Multitouch (Pinch Zoom)
Download and use most apps (Appstore works)

    Does not work:
    Bluetooth
    Youtube
    Camera

I was not able to pop-up on screen keyboard during initial setup. Just skip all data entry part. Once the home screen comes, you can enable on screen keyboard on bottom right.

Aw man, it would be so cool if I could dual boot this and Windows sometime in the near future. I'll be watching this thread!
