Default Top pen buttons turns pen to eraser mode

I purchased an Axiotronic Studio pen for my ep121 and use the two buttons on it extensively.

I have the alt modifier assigned to the button closest to the tip, and right click assigned to the upper button. I have replicated this bug even switching the assignments. around.

    I have wacom 7.0.2-21 Installed.

    Here is what happens.

I press the upper button on the pen and it work normally like it is supposed to. Either sending a right-click or alt command, whatever is assigned to it. But roughly 1 in 5 times, pressing the upper button will switch the pen into erase mode. It make the pen think that it is flipped upside down and trying to erase something.

Sometimes I can get it back to normal by pressing the buttons some more, but other time I have to flip the pen over, bring the eraser close to the screen, and than go back to drawing normal, it seems to reset it.

Any ideas what would cause this glich? If I turn off the eraser all together in the wacom options, it does go away, but I would like to be able to use the eraser. I use it fairly regularly.

I've mostly been able to recreate this bug in TVpaint, Zbrush and Artrage. It can't be program specific.

    ...Interesting diagnostic stuff I discovered
In the wacom pen tablet properties, if you hold ctrl and press the about button, a new diagnostic window will appear.

Under the switches it shows 00000000000, when nothing is pressed, 1000000000 when I just press the screen, 01000000000 when I press the bottom button, and 00100000000 when I press the top button.

However every one and a while, when I press the top button, 0010000000 doesn't come up, that must be when the error occurs.

When the error does occur the device ID changes from 0x4020 to 0xc020 (the device code the comes up when the eraser is normally pressed).

And I just figured out the problem. If I have the pen out of range, press and hold the top button, bring the pen into range, the device ID of the pen is set to 0xc020. The only way to reset it is the bring the pen away from the tablet and approach again.

So I guess I solved my problem. I just need to make sure that my pen is always within range when I press the upper button, or else the device code will be screwed up.

Anyone know how to write an autohot key script that would always make the device be recognized by 0x4020 when one of the buttons is pressed? Because I never ever need to press a button and use the eraser (it is impossible)

In the course of writing this post I figured out the problem, hopefully other can learn from it.

    Kyler

    Can anyone duplicate this result?

    Thanks

Hmmm... I think it have to be a driver fix that would solve this, the switchs number stays 00000000000 when the top button is pressed and the pen is brought near to the tablet with and shows the 0xc020 code. The tablet is not at all detecting the button press.

At least I can better learn to live with it, and it doesn't seem so random. I could theoretically use this bug as a feature.

    Congratulations, I think yopu've discovered a feature

The pen on my EP121 behaves exactly as you describe. I even tried it on my eBook reader which has a Wacom digitiser (and runs on Linux), and it behaved in the same way - if I press the upper button before the pen is in range of the screen it is interpreted as an eraser device.

I guess Wacom implemented this feature so that users with a pen that has buttons but no eraser can still get eraser functionality, without requiring additional application support.

Maybe it would be helpful if Wacom told their users what the product's features were

I tested it with a Wacom UP-817E. I don't have an Axitron pen. I don't think the penabled digitiser can identify the type of pen, so it should behave consistently with any penabled pen. Although obviously different pens have different combinations of buttons, etc.

I had the same thing. I have found a kind of solution: turn off in wacom's driver the second tip of the pen- the natural rubber tip. When you disable it in the Wacom drivers then the 'right click' button will work properly.

For the eraser you can use shortcut or mouse gesture via strokeIT.
